The Dark Knight Rises Review

The Story
8 years after the events of The Dark Knight and the disappearance of Batman, Gotham is living in a time of peace. Thanks to the passing of the Dent Act, a law put in place after the death of DA Harvey Dent, James Gordon has all but eradicated violent and organised crime. It is during this peace time that a new threat rises in the form of the brilliant and deadly Bane who, like Bruce Wayne, is also a disciple of Ra’s Al Ghul and the League of Shadows.
As Bane makes his way to Gotham to act out the leagues final plan, Bruce Wayne realises that Batman is needed to battle the rising evil and suits up once again. It will take all of Batman’s cunning, strength and wit to outsmart Bane, save Gotham and to finally put to rest the ghost of Ra’s Al Ghul.
Whilst this conflict is going on, cat burglar Selina Kyle finds herself working with the league of shadows in an effort to have her criminal record wiped clean and gain a fresh start in life. Little does she know that she will be drawn into a battle for her life and the lives of all of Gotham.

The Good
Once again, Christopher Nolan brings to the screen a living, breathing Gotham that seeps atmosphere from every pore. It’s a testament to his abilities as a director and film maker that even after three films his Gotham is still full of twists and turns that leaps off of the screen. It seems that the experience he learned from making Inception has only gone on to strengthen his abilities and talents, especially in filming action and fast paced scenes like the return of the Bat Pod and Banes battles against Batman. The cast is still top notch, with Bale and Caine making every scene they have together heartfelt and full of love and respect. Bale as usual is brilliant to watch and he will defiantly go down as being one of the best on screen Batmans ever put to film. Joseph Gordon Levitts Detective Blake is a fantastic addition to the mythos of this Batman and is the one to give Bruce Wayne the push he needs to return to the streets and save the city. Tom Hardy is as always, excellent and brings a ferocity and humanity to his interpretation of the intelligent and deadly Bane. Whereas the Joker used chaos as a reason to fuel his twisted plans, Bane’s meticulous planning plus his size and strength easily make him more than a match for Batman and push Bruce Wayne to the very edge. Sometimes it can be hard to hear what he is saying, but I personally owe that more to his deep accent than his mask. Rounding out the cast is without a doubt the best thing about the film, Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle. She is both cunning and agile whilst being fiercely independent; her motives at first are all about furthering her goals of a normal life but slowly she comes round to protecting the weak and down trodden. Catwoman (even though she is never called such in the film) has always worked best as a female Robin Hood, robbing from the rich to give to the poor and her character arc in the film is a perfect representation of that. Hathaway is able to switch from bumbling maid to snarky thief in the blink of an eye and like Heath Ledger in the previous film she is an absolute joy to watch. I would love to see more of her as Selina in another film as her version of Catwoman is simply awesome to behold.
The film as expected looks stunning and features an amazing soundtrack by the multi-talented Hans Zimmer (my favourite track being imagine the Fire). On top of this the character and overall designs are brilliant, from the fantastic powerful Bane to the graceful and elegent look of Selina Kyle. The new vechile in Batmans arsenal, the Bat, looks friggin amazing and rightly so steals every scene it’s featured in.

The Bad
The story, whilst strong and sometimes complex, feels a bit weak in comparison to the previous films. I understand why as this film serves to resolve all of the hanging plot threads from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. While it does this in every sense of the word, some of the conclusions are maybe not what some people expect.  The main meat of the story, the take over of Gotham, does feel like it goes on a bit and some of the plot points like the Police force and such is a wee bit silly. Although the major gripe with the story is how Bruce Wayne feels the World doesn’t need Batman anymore. In the comics this would never work as Bruce knows there is always the need for a Batman but in Nolans films it works as this is a Bruce who is tormented by his losses and failures. He only gives up after the death of Harvey Dent helps push through a law to prevent any kind of organised and violent crime in the city. In essence he is removing himself from the equation and letting the police do their jobs and protect Gotham.  It’s defiantly a controversial choice but does bring a true end to Bruce Waynes story.
The main thing I disliked about the film was how little there was of Batman. I would say he is in this film as much as the Joker was in the last and that is a crying shame.  The only benefit this had was how excited I was when Batman was on screen; his return to Gotham though is fantastic and again it’s a shame we have to wait so long to see it. The final fate of Bane is also a bit of piss take, after the film building him up to be this powerful game changer, he is dispatched a bit to easily. Also people might feel that the running time is way too long and a lot of people may get agitated or bored. I think this is aimed more at the kids and people without a long attention span than most of the general public.

Final Verdict
After a four year long wait The Dark Knight Rises surpasses nearly every expectation. Even with its minor flaws it is still a fantastic film in its own right and a stunning conclusion to one of the best trilogies ever put to film. Watch it, love it and treasure it!

Which one should I wear today?

You have to hand it to Tony Stark. Upon building the Iron Man armor, he didn't just stop. He wanted to continue to improve the suit because that's what he does. He's a brilliant inventor so why would he settle for just one suit? It might be more cost effective to try to improve an existing suit before just creating a completely new one. But since he has a bit of money lying around and likes flashy things, it makes sense he'd keep building new models.
Today, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has released the first official image from Iron Man 3. Production has been underway but apparently principal photography has now started.
It may not reveal anything new but that's okay. The movie's release date of May 3, 2013 is still a ways off. We don't need spoilers just yet.

Idiots...

nti-gay group One Million Mums is now targeting comic books following upcoming gay storylines in Marvel and DC titles.
The latest campaign from the group follows their recent objections to advertisements with gay couples by JC Penny, GAP and Urban Outfitters.
The conservative Christian group is objecting to a gay wedding between Northstar and his boyfriend Kyle Jinadu in Marvel Comic’s Astonishing X-Men, as well as the revelation that a DC comics character will soon be revealed as gay.
A post on the One Million Mums website reads: “Children desire to be just like superheroes. Children mimic superhero actions and even dress up in costumes to resemble these characters as much as possible. Can you imagine little boys saying, ‘I want a boyfriend or husband like X-Men?’

“This is ridiculous! Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models? They don't but do want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light.
“These companies are heavily influencing our youth by using children's superheroes to desensitize and brainwash them in thinking that a gay lifestyle choice is normal and desirable. As Christians, we know that homosexuality is a sin (Romans 1:26-27).”
The group is encouraging their followers to write to the comic book publishers and urge them to cancel all plans for gay superhero characters immediately.
The wedding between Northstar and Kyle Jinadu is set to appear in issue #51 of Amazing X-Men.

Some people just have way to much time on their hands!

DC comics gay character revelaed?

After all the speculation, it looks like Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern is indeed the character who will be re introduced to the DC universe as gay. I for one am pleased with this, being a massive Green Lantern and Alan Scott fan, I can only hope it helps to spread the word that being gay is normal. Taken from comicbookmovie.com:

Earlier this week, it was revealed that a DC superhero would be reintroduced as a homosexual in "The New 52" continuity. So, who is it? Hold on to your power rings Green Lantern fans, the answer may just surprise you!

Josh Wilding - 5/27/2012

The ever reliable lads over at Bleeding Cool have revealed that they've recently heard rumblings that the DC Comics character about to be revealed as a gay man is none other that Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern who is currently making his presence felt in James Robinson's Earth 2 series. The site didn't run a story, but have now heard from another "much stronger" source that he is indeed the superhero about to come out of the closet. We'll be sure to bring you official confirmation when and if it comes. How do you guys feel about this news? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

First solo image of Batman Earth 2

Taken from comicvine.com:

This May DC will launch EARTH 2 as part of their "Second Wave" of "New 52" titles. It will be a series set in a parallel world to the one we're currently reading in the pages of the "New 52" titles. We've seen the world before but with Crisis on Infinite Earths, the confusion over multiple worlds was put to rest. We've seen elements of Earth 2 arise over the years and now it's back in full force.
Earlier this month we saw the variant cover to EARTH 2 #1 by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado but today, the Source has unveiled Jim Lee's character designs for Batman, which gives us a full look at his costume.
What will this Batman be all about? Because of the escrima sticks, and based on what happened in past Earth 2 stories, we're assuming it's Dick Grayson under the cowl. Here's what EARTH 2 editor, Pat McCallum said:
Who will Batman kill to save his own daughter? Right out of the gate that should tell you we’re dealing with a different kind of Dark Knight here. More ruthless, dangerous…the costume is familiar and yeah, there is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left. EARTH 2 is about to become a very bad place to be a bad guy.
So perhaps this is still Bruce before he retires in the Earth 2 world. We'll have to stay tuned and wait until May to find out more.

New Robin Image from Earth 2

Taken from comicvine.com:

Yesterday we saw the EARTH 2 designs for Batman by Jim Lee. Today, DC has revealed the designs for Robin by Kevin Maguire and it may not be quite what you'd expect.
That's right, some of you suspected after seeing the cover for WORLD'S FINEST #1 with Huntress and Power Girl. Huntress had a different costume in the back image with the letter 'R' on it.
Here's what EARTH 2 writer, James Robinson, had to say:
Helena Wayne has been taught how to be the perfect Robin. Assured as a detective, fighter, scientist, pilot and all around crime-fighter she’s been groomed by Batman to be the perfect caped manhunter (or should we say manHuntress) when she grows up.
Are you getting excited for EARTH 2? Apparently next week's HUNTRESS #6 will give some clues as to how she ended up on the "New 52" Earth.

New Resident Evil 6 Details emerge

Taken from Kotaku.com:

Details about Resident Evil 6 are super scant. Today, however, that changes. Today, they are simply scant as the game's developer shed some more light on the title, providing more info about the upcoming title. As previously revealed in the game's trailer, Resident Evil 6 is set in China. Today, Capcom revealed that the setting is a fictional coastal town called Lanshiang.
And Capcom, in today's release, wanted to set the game's time period straight: the game takes place in 2013.
RE6 features zombies, who run and jump, as well as use weapons. According to Capcom, they are different from previous RE zombies.
The bulbous monster that appeared in the trailer is called "J'avo". Here's the official word from Capcom:
"Named by the BSAA after the Serbian word for 'demon', the first J'avo made an appearance in the conflict zone of Eastern Europe about six months before the action of Resident Evil 6. The J'avo still exhibit certain human elements—such as the ability to understand speech, work together as a group and use weapons—but they are also incredibly aggressive and a number of their actions have regressed to pure instinct.
When a J'avo takes damage it has the ability to regenerate itself. However if it is receives major damage then it will mutate that affected body part into a number of varied forms, meaning players will have to rethink their strategy and adapt to this unpredictability.
Resident Evil 6 stars Leon S. Kennedy, who was recruited as a government agent following the Raccoon City incident. Joining him is Helena Harper, who is a government agent in the process of transferring to the Secret Service.
Chris Redfield, last seen in Resident Evil 5, suffered personal trauma in the six months prior to RE6. He joins his colleagues to uncover a major bioterrorist attack.
There's also a mysterious third male protagonist, too. Capcom still hasn't revealed his name—though, it could be Hunk. According to Capcom, "We're still trying to track down his real identity but we do know this man is a mercenary currently engaged in a bloody conflict in Eastern Europe where reports confirm that B.O.W.s are increasingly being used. One day, he's told that he is the man to save the world. Whilst he doesn't understand the implications of this, he does immediately think how much money he can make from it."
Resident Evil 6 features"evolved" controls that will allow players to shot while moving, as well as roll in any direction and take cover. There is also an "enhanced" melee attack.
The outbreak goes global on November 20 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PC infection will follow soon after.

Well that wasn't much of a secret kept!

Skrulls, Skrulls everywhere!! Taken from Superherohype.com:

While the below figurine from the tie-in "Mighty Battle Skill & Strategy Game" certainly appears to be a Skrull, it's not uncommon for tie-in merchandise to sometimes borrow characters from the comics, even when they're not in the film. (Deathstroke, for example, was released as an action figure in the Dark Knight line).

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel's The Avengers is the superhero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as SHIELD, finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson.

Top 10 comics of January belong to DC!

I have to say, DC gambled with their new 52 semi reboot and well done to them for making it more or less a success. Batman and Green Lantern are as good as they have been for the last few years and Aquaman, finally, has a book to give him the recognition he has been needing for years. Only time will tell if all this will last.

Taken from comicvine.com:

What's the best way to start off the first full week into a new month? By taking a peek at comic marketshares and sales figures for the previous month, of course! Diamond, the industry's American comic distributor released figures for the month of January, 2012 and -- surprise, surprise -- DC Comics leads the industry in sales, once again, stealing the first ten spots for highest selling comics for the first month of the year.
The top five comic books sold for the month of January, 2012 were not only DC books, but each sold over one hundred thousand copies. If that doesn't seem like a lot to you, then you may want to consider what the highest selling comic books were before the launch of the new 52. Very rarely would the fifth highest selling title for a given month sell over one hundred thousand copies.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #5 beat out every other book last month selling 148,124 units and BATMAN #5 was not far behind with 139,492 units sold. The eleventh spot was held by Marvel's UNCANNY X-MEN #5 with 67,855 units sold. While a full list of books can be seen below, the numbers still do not reflect the number of digital sales for last month, or at all. Unfortunately, digital sales numbers are still being kept under wraps, and with DC's same day and date digital program still in effect we have to assume that the digital sales numbers are still adequate.
DC's VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development John Rood revealed the ranking for publisher's top ten digital titles for the month of January, 2012 but did not list the number of copies per title downloaded, making this information relatively difficult to gauge. Rood did, however, give some insight on the correlation between the print and digital sales of the same book.
The only titles that do, interestingly, stronger as a percentage of physical sales in digital are publishing franchises with high awareness like "Action" and "Detective" or character franchises with high awareness like Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman. And they are still relatively insignificant in total compared to print sales. But if you see any variance off of a straight average, it would be because of the built in interest that those franchises have with all readers – both physical and digital.

Star Wars + Terminator = Something a bit wrong

Take from Denofgeek.com... Yeah it sounds a bit crap to me. But will give it a chance, like I always do with Star Wars stuff:

Stories about a live-action TV series set in the Star Wars universe have been floating around the web for ages, and the fresh news, earlier this month, that it had a working title (Star Wars: Underworld) led to hopes from some quarters that such a series may one day arrive on our television boxes.
Yesterday, a new and rather strange rumour surfaced, first at Ain’t It Cool, and then picked up by the good people at Bleeding Cool (it goes without saying, by the way, that you should probably stop reading if you don't want any part of Star Wars Underworld's plot spoiled for you).
According to an unnamed source (who may or may not be reliable), one of the early episodes of the series may involve time travel – and the story owes a certain debt to The Terminator or Soldier, the Harlan Ellison-penned Outer Limits episode that inspired James Cameron in the first place.
The episode will involve a “group of bandits” who travel back in time to “stop Darth Vader ever existing”. As Bleeding Cool points out, this might not necessarily mean the bandits will attempt to kill Vader when he’s clad in black and struggling to breathe properly – they may head back further in time to kill Senator Palpatine, or even Anakin Skywalker while he was yet a boy.
If this proves to be the case, I wonder if they could spare the time to bump off Jar Jar Binks while they’re in the vicinity? We live in hope.
More news on this rumour as we get it. Assuming no one from the future comes and murders us before we can tell you about it, that is.

Matthew Vaughn back for X-Men First Class sequel

Taken from superherohype.com and can I just say, fuck yes :D :

Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class prequel was one of the most lauded superhero movies of 2011, and Fox CEO Tom Rothman told us last year that they're doing everything possible to get the director back for a sequel. In a new Deadline  story about Fox's President of Production Emma Watts renewing her own contract through 2015, there's a matter-of-fact mention that the company has closed the deal for Vaughn to return to direct the unnamed sequel, working from a script being written by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: THe Last Stand, Jumper, Sherlock Holmes) and with Bryan Singer once again producing.
It's a given that all the original cast from the first movie signed a multiple picture deal in their contract so we expect James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender returning as Professor X and Magneto respectively. It may be some time before we learn whether any of the rest of the cast, such as Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique or January Jones' Emma Frost, will be included in a follow-up to the prequel or if any new X-Men characters will be introduced.

UPDATE: Empire has revealed the four non-subscriber covers as well.

Following this morning's new photos, we have some more quotes from Marvel's Kevin Feige in which he talks about the mysterious enemy that The Avengers will be facing. Thanks to 'herolee10', the following excerpt comes from Empire:
"Who said they were aliens?" he teases. Beings from the Nine Realms, then, ventures Empire? "Closer...It's not Skrulls, I've been clear about that. Beyond that, we want to hide it. The identity of the alien race is not impactful. It exists in the comic books, but we're not setting up the Kree-Skrull war or anything like that."
He also address the rumor that we'll be seeing Red Skull in the May 4th release:
"Was Skull vaporised at the end of the movie, or thrust into another realm?" asks Feige. "That remains to be seen. It would be fun to see Skull in future, but he's not in this one." Whedon though is a little more circumspect when Empire confronts him. "I do have a comment on that," he says, before pulling a move worthy of Loki himself. "It's...oh, you're breaking up!"
Who do you think the mysterious enemy is?

Fuck me, this film can't arrive soon enough!! I'm hoping it might be the Negative Zone, Thanos or maybe even Dormamuu that appears in the film. Not long now :D
PS Im so buying he Cap and Thor covers!

DC has a new logo/logos don't you know

DC Entertainment today officially revealed its new brand identity, which was designed to showcase the company's portfolio of brands, stories and characters across all media platforms:

DC Entertainment, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company and home to iconic brands DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD, revealed today a new brand identity.  The new identity is reflective of the company’s mission to fully realize the value of a rich portfolio of brands, stories and characters, distinguished by incredible breadth and depth across publishing, media and merchandise.  A new logo for DC Comics was also introduced, closely aligning with DC Entertainment’s new mark.

“It’s a new era at DC Entertainment and the new look reflects a dynamic, bold approach while at the same time celebrates the company’s rich heritage and robust portfolio of characters,” stated John Rood, EVP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development for DC Entertainment. “It was just a few months ago that Superman, Batman and many of our other Super Heroes were updated when we launched DC Comics – The New 52 and now it’s time to do the same for the company’s identity while remaining true to the power of storytelling which is still at the heart of DC Entertainment.”

DC Entertainment worked with Landor Associates, one of the world’s leading brand consulting and design firms, to develop an identity that creates a visual connection among the company, its three brands DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD and its vast array of properties as well as celebrates the power of the company’s stories and characters.  The design of the new DC Entertainment identity uses a “peel” effect – the D is strategically placed over the C with the upper right-hand portion of the D peeling back to unveil the hidden C – symbolizing the duality of the iconic characters that are present within DC Entertainment’s portfolio.

“It was our goal to capture DC Entertainment in a dynamic and provocative identity.  Our solution is a living expression which changes and adapts to the characters, story lines and the ways fans are consuming content,” explains Nicolas Aparicio, Executive Creative Director at Landor’s San Francisco office.  “The new identity is built for the digital age, and can easily be animated and customized to take full advantage of the interactivity offered across all media platforms.”

The new brand identity will come to life across all consumer touch points in order to create a clear and consistent message in support of DC Entertainment.  The new identity will begin to appear on comic books and graphic novels as well as new websites in March.  Consumers will also see the new identity rolled out over time on other DC Entertainment products from Warner Bros. including film, television, interactive games and merchandise.

“We believe our new brand identity will strongly resonate with our loyal fans who will want to proudly express their affinity for DC Entertainment and their passion for their favorite stories and characters, this new look allows them to easily do this. In addition we were excited to update our identity, it’s not often a company gets to revisit something as important as its brand and we took the opportunity to make sure it represented the multi-media business we set out to build with the formation of DC Entertainment,” said Amit Desai, SVP of Franchise Management for DC Entertainment.

I really dunno what to think about the new design. Whilst I like how clean and modern it is and some of the designs are great, such as the Green Lantern one and the character ones with the peeling. But I really really love the last logo and thought it looked superb. Like when it popped up before the Dark Knight, it looked stylish and from a comic book. This logo looks great on the side of the graphic novel above and will no doubt fit in with the digital age of comics. Its an interesting time and Im sure it will grow on me as the new 52 continues getting better and better!

George Lucas is retiring?! Well who could blame him?

Taken from Denofgeek.com:

In a new interview with the New York Times, ahead of the US release of his next project, Red Tails, George Lucas has said “I’m retiring”. He added that “I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff”.

Appreciating that the Star Wars prequel trilogy has left a bit of a sour taste, as has the continual tinkering with the films themselves, George Lucas is an immense force in modern day movies. Without him, there’s no THX 1138, there’s no American Graffiti, there’s no Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Howard The Duck or Willow

The news of him moving away from the blockbuster film business, albeit with an out clause for Indiana Jones 5, comes off the back of the battle to get Red Tails to the screen. According to long-time producing partner Rick McCallum, “once this is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to”.

Will Lucas be gone from movies altogether, though? No. Instead, he wants to spend the rest of his film making days on smaller, personal films. Not commercial movies at all, by the sounds of it,.

Interestingly, Lucas also commented on the negative reactions he gets when he changes his films. “On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie … I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’ ”

He added, talking about making more Star Wars films, “why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?”. He also noted that Steven Spielberg’s admission that the nuking the fridge in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was down to him, not Lucas, was false. “He’s trying to protect me”, Lucas said (before talking about why the fridge nuking was more plausible than people gave it credit for).

No PS4 at this years E3

Taken from kotaku.com:

Last week, trade site MCV reported that the PlayStation 4 would make an appearance at this year's E3 in Los Angeles. Sony begs to differ.
Both Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Corp. have come out in denial of the report, with SCE's Andrew House telling CVG "I don't think we're contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point."
Sony's Kaz Hirai, meanwhile, said the same thing. "Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3. I've always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."
Nintendo's Wii U will obviously be at the June expo, and it's becoming increasingly expected that Microsoft's follow-up to the Xbox 360 will be first revealed there as well. A PS4 presence would have made it one hell of a show, but, well, bummer.

I for one am very happy about this. I think the idea of a 10 year cycle is a brilliant one and having a new console "war" as it were in the next year or so would just be way to soon. With the Wii U being released this year and the next XboX rumored to be revealed at E3, its a very exciting year for gaming as it is. Plus I am sure Sony would want to put all their effort and drive into the PS Vita release rather than a new console.

Magneto is back in Frist Class Sequel

Taken from superherohype.com:
SuperHeroHype caught up with the in-demand actor tonight at the National Board of Review Gala in New York CIty, where he received the Spotlight Award for his roles in four 2011 movies, including "First Class," and Fassbender told us that he is indeed in!
"I have no choice. They contracted me for two options. I gotta get down with it," he joked. "We're at the ground level, but yeah I think there's going to be another one."
We all knew he would be back in some shape or form but it still is great to hear that Fassbender is def on board for the sequel :)

The Soul Swords are back!!

Taken from UGO.com, heres what we have to look forward to in the latest instalment of the Soul series:

The Next Generation

SoulCalibur V features brand new characters, many of which are the offspring of some SoulCalibur veterans. This "next generation" of fighters have the potential to stand toe-to-toe with the SoulCalibur greats and bring refreshing, yet familiar, gameplay to the battle. Sophitia's children, Patroklos and Pyrrha use a sword and shield like their mother and many of their movements and abilities will feel familiar to Sophitia players. Leixia, the daughter of Xianghua, uses a sword just like her mother and moves around the playing field just as nimbly. Then, while not their children, we have Zatsu and Ziba who have trained under Taki and Kilik. Both characters fight like their respective masters and might become new favorites for Taki and Kilik players. Finally, there's Z.W.E.I. and Viola, who are mercenaries for Siegfreid. Z.W.E.I. is accompanied by a teleporting beast that fights with him during battle and Viola uses a magical crystal orb to disorient opponents.

Deeper Customization

Fans of SoulCalibur IV's character creation will be happy to know SoulCalibur V features even deeper character customization. Players can now customize body type, height, facial features and even the attributes of individual body parts, such as forearms and calves. You can also customize armor and clothing with patterns and designs and even change the color, effects and style of the weapons.
You start off by picking an exisiting character's fighting style to mimic, one of which includes the "Devil Jin" style from the Tekken series. This allows players to make characters that fight similar to Devil Jin and is the only fighting style exclusive to custom characters.

New Techniques

SoulCalibur V features many changes to the systems introduced to the series in SoulCalibur IV. The Guard Impact mechanic has been changed so that players must hold back, as opposed to forward, and press all three attack buttons together. This uses a portion of the new Critical Meter to repel unblockable attacks. It also ignores the height of the attack, blocking both high and low attacks.
The new Just Guard mechanic allows players to retaliate after attacks more quickly if they block an attack at the perfect moment. Performed by blocking just before impact, the Just Guard can be used to rush in quickly and link together otherwise slow combos. This is particularly helpful with slower characters like Nightmare and Astaroth, where close-combat is almost impossible. By performing a Just Guard, I was able to catch quick characters like Ivy and Maxi off-guard with Nightmare's big swings.
The Critical Meter mentioned before is part of the new way SoulCalibur is played. Critical Finishes and the Soul Gauge have been removed in lieu of a new gauge that is used to perform the new "Brave Edge" and "Critical Edge" attacks. This new mechanic has transformed SoulCalibur into a more traditional fighter, where players are constantly trying to raise their meter in order to unleash a special move.

New Stages

SoulCalibur V's new stages are vibrant and beautiful. There is a new focus on Ring Outs that transform stages into new environments when a character has been thrown to the lower level. The stages are ever-changing and players are constantly conscious of their environments and how to avoid attacks. Unlike other fighting games where the stages are just a pretty background and don't factor into the gameplay, SoulCalibur V becomes a dangerous when players get close too the edge of a stage and players will frantically try to out-sidestep one another to to avoid being defeated via Ring Out.
On the Sinking Merchant Ship stage specifically, versus matches quickly turned into trying to push each other towards the edges and, if I was the one too close, trying to reverse the situation. Once one of us fell off, the next round would start off in a lower section of the level, which was a completely new environment with new hazards and scenery.

Ezio Auditore de Firenze

SoulCalibur V features the king of assassins himself, Ezio Auditore from the Assassin's Creed series. Ezio joins the ranks of the SoulCalibur fighters and has no problem holding his own. He utilizes all the gadgets Leonardo da Vinci created for him through his travels, including the pistol and the double hidden blades. In addition, Ezio will have a sword, crossbow and countless other techniques to mame his opponents.
Ezio is extremely fast and accurately reflects his maneuverability from the Assassin Creed titles. I was dodging attacks, rolling over opponents backs and performing jumping hidden blade stabs fluidly and quickly. The larger characters were no match for me, as Ezio allowed me to sidestep and punish the heavier, slower swings of characters like Astaroth with ease. The quicker characters, such as Patroklos or Voldo, while proving to be a bit more problematic, were still unable to counter my swift attacks and lighting-fast counters.
Requiescat in pace.

Star Wars Live Action gets a new title

Taken from comingsoon.net:
The bad news for fans eagerly anticipating the live action "Star Wars" series is that not much has changed since word broke last June that the massive production is currently on hold, awaiting costs to drop to a point that will make the FX-heavy undertaking financially feasible. Producer Rick McCallum is hoping that won't be too far off, however, and today told IGN that the show even has a working title: "Star Wars: Underworld."

"It's underneath what's going on," he reiterated about the series' focus, "It's the criminals and the gangs. The guys who are running Wall Street, basically. The guys who are running the United States."

Even if the series is a few more years away, McCallum says there's no risk in the scripts become dating and that the delay can only make the show stronger.

"They're timeless," he explains. "They take place between Episode III and Episode IV. That 20 year period when Luke is growing up. It's not about Luke, but it's about that period when the Empire is trying to take things [over]."
Interesting. At least its a different spin on the same old Star Wars stories. Sounds like Boba Fett and co are def going to be a major player in this series.

Facebookers Assemble!

Taken from Comicvine.com:

This is either a really good, or really, really not so good, depending on how you look at Facebook games. In an effort to compete with online Facebook games like Zynga's MAFIAWARS and FARMVILLE, Disney Interactive Media Group has announced the upcoming launch of their all-new Marvel Facebook game titled Marvel: Avengers Alliance.
It's one thing to go head-to-head against some of Marvel's biggest villains, but its a whole other when there is actually a point to all that fighting. According to a recent article the game will actually feature a story line. When the player launches the game they will be "recruited as a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent.
As an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.. players will be given the opportunity to build an all-Marvel team featuring some of the publisher's biggest names including Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America and many more. With your team of Marvel Avengers, players will deal with the repercussions of "the PULSE," a galaxy-wide disaster that has left planet earth vulnerable by targeting the super-villains of Earth and making them stronger. Based on the trailer, some of the super-villains players will face off against include Doctor Doom, Loki, Magneto and more. The question remains, what will be the cause of "the PULSE?" We will have to wait and see.
While we don't have a lot of information about the upcoming game at this time, we do have a very cool trailer that would get just about anyone excited to build their very own team of heroes to face off against some powerful super-villains. This all-new RPG game developed by Playdom will allow plays not only to command heroes, but to face head-to-head against some of the Marvel Universe's most nefarious villains. The game will be available to play exclusively on Facebook, and while it is not yet available, the first people to "like" the Facebook page will be the first to play this new RPG game.
What do you think of the trailer? Do you think that the premise for the game sounds interesting? Do you like to play games on Facebook?
